Library of Congress: "American Memory"
Project:
The Library of Congress and ACDA have joined formally in a cooperative agreement for a website entitled: "Choral Music of America, c. 1870-1923." The site will launch within the Library's existing website (www.loc.gov). ACDA members will work on the project to select choral sheet music from the collections of the Library's Music Division according to a specified criteria.
The purpose of the site is to provide interesting repertoire for choral conductors to download legally, and without cost, in order to enhance programming. The composition of the selected works will be:
- published works by American composers;
- works that are less well-known;
- works that are in the public domain;
- works that, as a group, are a combination of sacred and secular, mixed chorus, women's chorus and men's chorus;
- brief works less than 10 minutes in length;
- works that are unaccompanied or are accompanied by at most two musical instruments (as opposed to orchestral works).
The first phase (25 selected works) will launch in February, 2008, and additional phases of works will follow in order to build a catalogue of significance."
